Zack Snyder, known for directing several big movies, is finally getting to release ‘Rebel Moon,’ a project he’s been thinking about for 40 years. Snyder shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he first had the idea for this movie back in the 1980s when he was a film student.
He revealed that ‘Rebel Moon,’ which will come out in two parts, was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Seven Samurai’ and the Western version, ‘The Magnificent Seven.’ Snyder initially tried to make it a dark and mature version of ‘Star Wars’ in 2012, but Disney, which owns Star Wars, didn’t go for it because of the movie’s mature themes.
After Disney turned it down, Snyder thought about making it into a TV series like ‘Game of Thrones in space,’ but he eventually decided to stick with making it a movie.
Netflix came into the picture and agreed to fund the project, allowing Snyder to make the movie with the mature rating he wanted. Deborah Snyder, his wife, said that these challenges were actually good because they let Snyder make the movie his way, without having to change his story for the studios.
She even mentioned how Snyder had issues with DC Comics over creative freedom and joked about how Star Wars would have been an even tougher challenge. ‘Rebel Moon’ is not just a passion project for Snyder; it’s also Netflix’s most expensive movie for 2023. Vanity Fair reported that the movie has a huge budget of $166 million.
The first part of the movie, ‘Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire,’ is about a young woman from a colony at the edge of the galaxy. She goes looking for warriors from other planets to help fight against the armies of the evil Regent Balisarius.
The movie is set to release on December 15, 2023.
