Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan Reveals Show ‘Has No Plot, Really’ in Latest Podcast Interview

“Yellowstone,” the hit Western drama, isn’t set to return until this fall, but there’s still plenty of buzz around it.

The show’s creator and writer, Taylor Sheridan, recently appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast and shared some interesting insights.

Sheridan discussed the show’s mixed reviews, acknowledging that it hasn’t been a favorite among critics but has been a hit with audiences. He explained, “It’s not surprising that critics hate it because it’s designed for them to hate.”

Further, Sheridan made a candid revelation about the show’s structure, saying, “It has no plot, really.” He elaborated that this format allows him to explore various perspectives and delve into a particular way of life, adding a layer of defiance to his storytelling approach.

In contrast, Sheridan pointed out that the series’ prequels, including “1883” and “1923” (the latter returning for a second season), and the upcoming “1944,” are different from the original series in that they follow more defined plots.

While “Yellowstone” fans have been waiting since January 1, 2023, for new episodes, they can look forward to the series finale in November 2024. But it’s not just the show’s on-screen drama that’s been making waves. The Dutton universe has been stirring up plenty of real-world buzz too.

After the mid-season break, word started spreading that Kevin Costner, who portrays John Dutton, might leave the show.

This speculation turned out to be true, as Costner confirmed his exit due to issues related to scheduling and his salary. Following this, it was announced that “Yellowstone” would conclude with the final episodes of season 5, alongside plans for a new spin-off.

The upcoming spin-off, tentatively titled “2024,” initially seemed to be a project for Matthew McConaughey. However, recent rumors suggest that McConaughey might be reconsidering his involvement due to prolonged negotiation processes.

Amidst all this, Taylor Sheridan, the creator of “Yellowstone,” has been in the news for reasons beyond the show. His ranch filed a lawsuit against a coffee company co-owned by Yellowstone’s Cole Hauser, adding to the off-screen drama associated with the series.
