Kevin Costner’s Life Is More Complicated Than Any of His Movies

Kevin Costner’s life has always seemed larger than the scripts he stars in and right now, he’s living one of those stories.

The actor-director finds himself under fire in a high-stakes lawsuit: a stunt performer alleges she was coerced into an unscripted and non-consensual rape scene while filming Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2.

Costner hasn’t stayed silent. He’s filed a motion to dismiss the case, calling the claims “absolutely false” and insisting the scene was rehearsed and consensual.

Beyond the legal storm, Costner is also rethinking his artistic path. After years tied to Westerns and epic sagas, he’s now signaling a shift, saying his next films “don’t have to be a Western.”

And then there’s Horizon itself — his ambitious multi-part Western saga, which faced a rocky box-office reception. The first installment grossed about $38.7 million worldwide, falling short of expectations.

So behind the scenes of the man who built his legend on frontier epics: lawsuits, creative pivots, and an art project still struggling to break free from its own mythos.

The Costner–Baumgartner Breakup Battle

Kevin Costner’s divorce from Christine Baumgartner wasn’t just a breakup, it was a Hollywood soap opera.

She filed in May 2023 after 18 years of marriage, and what followed was months of courtroom drama, accusations, and some jaw-dropping numbers.

Christine first asked for a whopping $248,000 a month in child support, but after the dust settled, a judge slashed it down to about $63,000 a month.

Then there was the battle over their sprawling Santa Barbara estate, Costner’s team argued their prenup required her to move out within 30 days, but she dug in her heels and refused, sparking even more legal fireworks.

Things got nastier when Costner’s lawyers accused her of “gamesmanship of the worst sort,” claiming she’d been secretly prepping her exit by buying a new car and shifting money before filing. Christine’s side pushed back, hinting the prenup wasn’t as fair as Costner made it sound.

For Costner, it was brutal. He called the split a “crushing moment” and admitted it “hurt,” but said he had to keep it together for their three kids: “I can’t wilt like a daisy.”

By February 2024, the divorce was finalized, leaving behind a trail of bitterness, legal bills, and tabloid headlines that rival any drama Costner ever put on screen.

Turbulent Love Life

After graduating, Costner married Cindy Silva.

“We met at a party in 1975. She was so beautiful she took my breath away. Everyone looked at her like she was a goddess, and I was convinced I didn’t stand a chance because I saw myself as a nobody,” Costner once recalled.

The couple had two daughters and a son together.

But their marriage was far from perfect.

Kevin Costner was unfaithful to Cindy, and his affairs became a favorite topic in the media. Back in 1989, he cheated on her with Halle Berry, and he was also linked to Michelle Pfeiffer.

On the list of women Costner dated were actress, model, and former beauty queen Billie Jean Brown, followed by actress Peggy Trentini, and there were even rumors about him and Mira Sorvino.

After divorcing Cindy, he quickly started a relationship with actress Holly Simpson, and in the ’90s he was also linked to supermodel Naomi Campbell.

His name was tied to Corinne Resnick and Angie Everhart as well. With Courteney Cox, he shared the screen in 3000 Miles to Graceland and later appeared on Friends—but in 1995, they were reportedly more than just co-stars.

That same year, he was romantically involved with fashion designer and America’s first top model, Cheryl Tiegs, and was often spotted with journalist Joan Lunden. By the following year, he had moved on to model Elle Macpherson.

After splitting with Elle, Costner reportedly charmed former model and future French First Lady Carla Bruni. From 1997 to 1998, he enjoyed a romance with actress and former Miss America, Tawny Little.

Kevin Costner was also linked to the late Kelly Preston, John Travolta’s wife, and rumors swirled that he had a fling with Whitney Houston.

Not long after, he met his future (and now soon-to-be ex) wife — but these weren’t the only affairs and scandals tied to the actor’s name.

His biggest love scandal came when he allegedly had an affair with the wife of his friend, baseball player Cal Ripken Jr. The betrayal reportedly shook Ripken so badly that he couldn’t focus on the game, costing him hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In October 2004, Costner faced more controversy when he was accused of misconduct at the spa of The Old Course Hotel in St. Andrews, Fife. He was sued for sexual harassment, though a court order at the time prevented him from being officially identified in the case.

“He said he wanted a sweet massage. He asked me if I’d like to touch him all over his body, and in the end, he took off his towel and started pleasuring himself,” the masseuse recalled. She later filed a complaint with hotel management, but instead of support, she was fired.

She accused the hotel of sexual discrimination after losing her job, claiming she was unfairly dismissed for speaking out against the Hollywood star.

Yellowstone Fallout

Kevin Costner’s exit from Yellowstone turned into one of Hollywood’s messiest behind-the-scenes dramas. At first, he was supposed to stick around for seasons 5, 6, and 7.

But in early 2023, Paramount decided to shake things up, splitting season 5 into “5A” and “5B.” That shift caused chaos with scheduling, especially since Costner was also trying to carve out time for his passion project, Horizon.

Costner says the scripts for 5B never even showed up when they were supposed to. He claims he was left hanging, trying to make Yellowstone his top priority, but constantly juggling delays and confusion.

While the show kept pushing forward, rumors started flying that Costner had walked away or didn’t want to commit. He later admitted he “took a beating” in the press and felt like the studio never had his back.

On the other side, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan painted things a little differently. He called Costner’s departure “disappointing” but stopped short of burning the bridge completely. According to Sheridan, their working relationship wasn’t destroyed it was just complicated.

By the summer of 2024, Costner made it official: he wouldn’t be coming back as John Dutton. It was a gut punch for fans, since Dutton was the heart of the series. But Costner left the door cracked open. He’s said that under the right circumstances, he wouldn’t rule out working with Sheridan again.

For now, though, Yellowstone has to move on without its leading man and Costner is betting big on his Horizon saga.

Costner Political Drama

Back in 2023, U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman from Wyoming took a public shot at him during a conservative conference, mocking him for “backing the wrong horse.” It was a jab tied to his political associations and seemed designed to score points by using Costner’s name.

Costner himself has been pretty guarded about where he stands. In one interview, when pressed about who he was voting for, he flat-out refused to answer. He explained that voting was something sacred and private, hinting that he didn’t want his choices to be turned into tabloid fodder or partisan ammo.

At the same time, he’s been clear about his philosophy when it comes to his career. In a 2025 interview, Costner said movies should focus on audiences and storytelling, not politics.

His exact words: “Movies don’t have to be important, but they have to have an audience in mind … it’s got nothing to do with politics.” It was his way of pushing back against the idea that every Hollywood project needs a political message baked into it.
