Pumpkin carving has always been one of those traditions that sounds a lot easier than it actually is.

Every year I start out thinking I’m going to create some incredible masterpiece, and every year I end up covered in pumpkin guts while trying to figure out why my design looked so much better in my head.
Still, it’s one of my favorite parts of fall.
When my kids were younger, pumpkin carving became a family event. We’d spread newspapers all over the table, scoop out the insides, argue about designs, and somehow end up laughing more than actually carving. The finished pumpkins weren’t always perfect, but that’s never really been the point.
What I love most is that there are pumpkin carving ideas for everyone. Some are simple enough for beginners and kids, while others are detailed enough to impress the entire neighborhood. Whether you like spooky faces, funny characters, cute animals, or creative patterns, there’s no shortage of inspiration.
And let’s be honest, a glowing pumpkin on the porch instantly makes everything feel like fall.
These pumpkin carving ideas range from easy to impressive and are perfect for Halloween parties, family traditions, or simply adding a little seasonal fun to your home.
1. Bunny Face Carved Pumpkin

This adorable carved bunny pumpkin features glowing oval eyes and a sweet little nose, with a second pumpkin carved into ears and placed on top. It’s a creative and cute twist on the classic jack-o’-lantern that’s perfect for kids.
2. Fairy House Pumpkin

Carve windows and a heart-shaped door into a white pumpkin to transform it into an enchanting glowing fairy cottage. Decorate the base with moss, berries, and tiny figurines for a truly magical fall display.
3. Pumpkin Being Eaten by Mini Pumpkins

This hilariously terrifying carving features a screaming pumpkin being attacked and devoured by a horde of small white jack-o’-lanterns. It’s dramatic, creative, and guaranteed to be the most talked-about decoration on your block.
4. Pop Culture Pumpkin Lineup

Carve a whole crew of fandom-inspired designs — from sci-fi emblems to rock legends — and line them up for a seriously impressive Halloween display. Each pumpkin tells its own story and together they make a stunning collection.
5. X-Eyes Jack-o’-Lantern on White Pumpkin

A white pumpkin carved with X-shaped eyes and a jagged stitched mouth gives off major creepy-cute vibes. The light glowing through the pale skin creates a soft, eerie effect that’s different from traditional orange jack-o’-lanterns.
6. Classic TV Duo Pumpkins

Carve and style two pumpkins to look like a beloved classic TV duo — complete with painted features, felt hair, and carved expressions. Placed side by side, they make a hilarious and nostalgic Halloween display.
7. Alien Chest-Burster Pumpkin

Stack two pumpkins and carve a screaming face on top, then have a toy alien “burst” through the lower pumpkin with pumpkin guts spilling out dramatically. This cinematic horror-inspired setup is equal parts gross and genius.
8. Pumpkin with Braces

Carve a big grinning jack-o’-lantern, then add real soda can tabs and wire to create the look of metal braces on the teeth. It’s a clever, funny prop that takes just a few extra supplies to pull off.
9. Big Pumpkin Eating a Little Pumpkin

Carve a wide-grinned orange pumpkin and place a small carved white pumpkin halfway inside its mouth. The terrified expression on the little one makes this two-pumpkin setup absolutely hilarious.
10. Bug-Eyes and Teeth Pumpkin

Give your jack-o’-lantern a goofy, cartoon-like personality by inserting plastic eyeballs and white garlic cloves as teeth into the carved cutouts. The 3D elements bring the face to life in a way that flat carving alone can’t.
11. Puking Pumpkin

Carve a distressed face with the mouth wide open and let all the pumpkin’s seeds and stringy insides pour out dramatically onto the ground. It’s gross, funny, and one of the easiest “advanced-looking” carvings you can do.
12. Scary Peel-Back Face Pumpkin

Instead of cutting all the way through, peel back the outer skin of the pumpkin in curved layers to reveal the lighter inner flesh and create a menacing snarling face. This technique adds incredible dimension and texture without full cut-throughs.
13. Fairy Cottage Pumpkin with Natural Details

Transform a large orange pumpkin into a woodland fairy home by carving windows framed with twigs and a front door, then topping it with a moss and fern “roof.”
14. Giant Skeleton Pumpkin Display

This oversized sculpted pumpkin-headed skeleton rising from a pile of real pumpkins makes for a jaw-dropping store or yard display. It’s dramatic, spooky, and sets the ultimate Halloween scene.
15. Glowing Trio of Jack-o’-Lanterns

A grouping of three carved pumpkins — one with swirling eyes, one with a classic grin, and one with a detailed silhouette scene — creates a warm, cozy Halloween vignette. Lit from within, the different sizes and styles complement each other beautifully.
16. Etched Floral Vine Pumpkin

Rather than cutting all the way through, etch a delicate swirling vine and leaf pattern into the pumpkin’s surface so the light glows through the thinned skin. The result is an elegant, almost lace-like effect that looks stunning in the dark.
17. Night Fury Carving

This masterpiece-level carving features a highly detailed character and dragon scene etched and carved into the pumpkin’s flesh with remarkable precision. The glowing amber tones illuminate every intricate detail and turn the pumpkin into a genuine work of art.
18. Pumpkin House with Baby Pumpkin Resident

Carve a large pumpkin into a cozy little house complete with a window and open door, then nestle a tiny smiling pumpkin inside peeking out. It’s one of the most charming and wholesome carving ideas you’ll ever come across.
19. Angry Flaming Pumpkin

Carve fierce, furrowed brows and a snarling mouth into a tall gourd, then add carved flames bursting from the top. The elongated shape and blazing details give this jack-o’-lantern a genuinely intimidating presence.
20. Sculpted Skull Pumpkin

This breathtaking 3D sculpted skull carved from a pumpkin — complete with realistic teeth, eyelashes, and flowing hair — blurs the line between Halloween craft and fine art. Adorned with a real flower, it’s hauntingly beautiful.
